My partner arrived with the first voyage by Protea leaving Venice 21 August 1948 and arriving in Melbourne on 23 September. The passenger list names 898 people with ages ranging from 1 to 50. Nationalities include passengers from Russia, Latvia, Ukraine, Czech, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Austria, Jugoslavia, CSR, Roumania. There were 46 children under age 15. The ship continued to Sydney arriving 29 September where the voyage terminated. I understand that the ship broke down on the way and they had visits to ports in Africa for repairs. They also stopped in Bombay.
Maybe someone could fill in on other adventures during this trip.

My parents were on the voyage after this one that arrived in Sydney just before Christmas 1948. I am also trying to find out about life onboard from Genoa Italy to Australia. I am researching the life and times of displaced persons after the second world war, in Europe, the camps, the voyage and the first years of their life in the new country, as they all have a story to tell. It needs to be done now as many of those migrants are already gone. If i can help in some way, then please email.

Hello,
From your posting, I hope that you have been able to find data on the dp people camps in Europe after WWII you were researching on. I have recently began this task and would like to ask if you would know which dp camps existed near Naples, Italy in 1947 to early 1948. My parents were dp Russian immigrants who travelled on the "General Black" that made a stop in Peru early in 1948, but I understand the ship possibly proceeded to Argentina or elsewhere. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Elizabeth
