Re: Your ship?

Stefan Kuczera and his wife Helena(my Mum and Dad)arrived in Sydney on 24/11/1949 on the Heintzelman with my brother(Wladyslaw) and sister(Stefania). Are there any records available to show the childrens' dates of birth?
My mother was pregnant with me whilst on board (I was born 26/12/1949).What would my natitionality had been if I was born aboard ship?

Re: Your ship?

Welcome to the Fifth Fleet, Olga!

Your enquiry leads to a rare example of a case where the National Archives have not already placed a reference to the selection papers on their RecordSearch data base.  Searching for Kuczera, I could not find any references to Stefan, Helena, Wladyslaw or Stefania either.  Your best bet here is to send an e-mail to <ref@naa.gov.au>, asking that they look through all their record series for these names.

If the selection papers have gone missing, they might have been attached to a later citizenship file, for example.  There also ought to be something in the various Aliens Registration series or in the "Bonegilla Cards" (A2571).

Speaking of citizenship, your question on your own is intriguing and I do not know the answer.  For a start, it would depend on the laws about citizenship which were current in December 1949.  Although Australia had its own citizenship law as of 26 January 1949, it probably would not have applied on board a ship coming to Australia.  Have a look on the Web for anything you can find about United States citizenship law in 1949, as the Heintzelman was owned by the American Government but least to an international organization (the IRO).

Let us know how your searching goes.  Your searches could help others.

Best wishes,
Ann

Re: Your ship?

Hello, I'm actually the great grand-daughter of Klementine Balodis and I have been looking very hard and cannot find the list with her name on it. She traveled to New York in 1950 (about January 13) with her 3 children- Zigurds, Astrida, and Lolita. They are Latvian. I really want to find it to show it to my grandma. Thanks

Re: Your ship?

Hi - I've just found my Dad's passenger card on National Archives and since have been searching everything relative to him and his trip out here. As kids we were not told a lot - on account of the horrible atrocities suffered through Europe and within our family. Fortunately, Dad escaped Russia as a POW crawled to Austria then to Italy and boared a boat from there.
BUT- I can find stacks of info on the General Stuart Heintzelman in 1947 landing in Freemantle but NOTHING for its voyage landing in Melbourne on 03 March 1950 - in which he was a passenger. I'd be very keen to have that information and the list of people he travelled with. Most of the 1947 records state Latvians etc, my Dad was Hungarian. Garbor Szenkovics - passport issued in Austria 14.12.1949. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks Lynn

Dear Lynn, Welcome to the Fifth Fleet!  Have you had an opportunity to look in the FAQ section of these Forums, where you will find advice on how to obtain a passenger list for you father's voyage on the Heintzelman?

There might also be a "correspondence file" on the voyage.  The FAQ gives advice on how to find that too.

Dear Alexandra, Welcome to the Fifth Fleet!  Recently I posted some information in the FAQ section of these Forums on what is available on IRO voyages to the United States and how to find it.  Hope this helps, but come back if you have more questions or want to share your success!  Regards, Ann.
