SS Svalbard

Looking for relatives of PIOTR BRYKSA - IRO, Group Resettlement to Australia, Listed passenger on Immigrant Ship Passenger List: SS Svalbard, Arrival - June 27, 1949 - Melbourne, Australia.  One of the hostels Mr. Bryksa stayed at was the Migrant Workers' Hostel in Maribyrnong, Victoria.  Mr. Bryksa was a dear friend to my mother, Julia Zaba, while they were both at DP Camp Lebenstedt and Fallingbostel, Germany.  Unfortunately, they got separated - Julia Zaba was sent to Canada and Mr. Bryksa was sent to Australia.   They were actually to get married but those plans never did work out.  Dreams shattered for both of them.  Even though we do not have blood ties, I feel as though Mr. Bryksa is part family and just want to find out more about him when he was alive.  Can anyone out there help?  Thank you.

Re: SS Svalbard

I've searched http://www.whitepages.com.au and the Victorian Government's online deaths to 1985 index for that family name without results.  Use Google to find the <Ryerson index> to see if any transcribers have registered a death.  Or think positive and enquire through the ethnic communities online in Australia.  What nationality/ethnic origin is the Bryksa family name?  HTH.

Re: SS Svalbard

Hi Tundern,
Thank you for taking your time to research the family name Bryksa in Melbourne.  I have been in communication with The National Archives of Australia and they have just completed their research on the Migrant Selection Document file (letter arrived by post a week ago).  This file is available online, for a minimal fee, of course.  Mr. Piotr Bryksa was born on July 3, 1911 in Prsemysl, Poland.  I was sent naturalization papers for Piotr and Aniela Bryksa.  They were naturalized Australians in 1960 in Northcote, Victoria.  They lived at 374 High Street, Northcote, Melbourne in 1960.  Thanks for the tip on where else to research (i.e.: Ryerson Index, etc.).  I will check it out and will contact Polish community centres in Melbourne.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: SS Svalbard

Research is slowly progressing but going well, thank you. I have sent an email to the Australian Polish Community Services asking if Piotr and Aniela Bryksa are in the APCS membership archives.   I am waiting on a response.
